Meet Assignment Procedures

______________________________________________

NAWGJ assigns judges for USAG, AAU, USAIGC, NCAA, YMCA, and YWCA meets. Two assigners volunteer their time to coordinate meet assignments in Florida. Carol Curley assigns judges for meets held in central and north Florida. Sharyn Strickland assigns judges for meets held in the southern part of the state.

ELIGIBILITY FOR ASSIGNMENT

A judge will be assigned to meets if copies of all current membership cards are on file with the State Judging Director and if all CPE requirements have been fulfilled. By accepting an assignment and signing a contract, judges agree to comply with all NAWGJ policies and to adhere to professional standards.

PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS AND POLICIES

All NAWGJ judges in Florida are required to wear the official NAWGJ or AAU uniform (as designated on the contract) unless otherwise specified in the judging contract. Cell phones must be disabled while on the competition floor. Judges should refrain from talking to one another at the judging tables unless an official conference is called by the Chief Judge or Meet Referee. Weapons are not allowed in competition venues. Once competition has started, seating arrangements of judges may not be changed. Affiliated judges may be assigned to meets but may not be assigned as a Chief Judge. Affiliated judges must refrain from contact with their competitors/children while the competition is in progress or while wearing their uniforms before and after competition. Following competition, judges are not allowed to discuss the scoring of the meet or the conference/inquiry decisions with parents or coaches. Questions should be referred to the Meet Referee.

AVAILABILITY FORMS AND CONTRACTS

Availability forms will be sent to judges two times each year, once in the early summer to determine availability for fall meets and once in the early-mid fall to determine availability for spring meets.

When a meet becomes available, it is assigned in the following manner:

  • Level of the meet (judges must have appropriate rating)
  • Meet director preference Location of the meet
  • Carpool arrangements
  • Assignments may also be adjusted to provide NAWGJ members minimum of 3 meets for purposes of active status

When you are assigned to a meet, a blank contract will be sent to you stating the date, level and type of meet. If you are available to judge, fill in the blanks and return the contract to the assigner prior to the deadline date listed. If you are not available to judge, write a note to the assigner and return it with the contract to the assigner. Assignments may need to be changed once the schedule of the meet is known. This means that an assignment could be changed within one week of the meet.

MEET INFORMATION

Approximately 7 - 10 days prior to the meet, the assigner will send the information you need to judge the meet: location, time you need to report, event you wthe ill be judging, hotel arrangements, carpools, meals, etc. Please read this information carefully and make certain you understand it. If you are assigned to a hotel room and do not show up for the room as specified on your contract, you will be charged for your portion of the cost of the room.

If you do not need the hotel room for the night(s) specified on the meet information sheet, CALL THE ASSIGNER immediately to avoid getting charged for the room! Once you know the event you will be judging, it is important that you take the time to prepare properly for the meet. Please review and study the routines, practice judge in a local gym or with video, and come to the meet prepared and knowledgeable of all rules and updates. It is your responsibility to provide your own supplies.

REPLACEMENTS

Once a contract is signed, judges are expected to honor the contractual agreement to judge the meet. If an emergency occurs and you are unable to judge the contracted meet, call the assigner and ask who is available to replace you. Judges may not replace themselves on a meet without first contacting the assigner. Only the assigner knows all of the circumstances of a particular meet: judges approved/not approved by the Meet Director; hotel and travel accommodations and changes to such by other judges; active status of the replacement judge; impact of changes on Chief Judge assignmentsIf you have to pull off a meet, you must pull off the entire meet. It is not permissible to judge one day and bring in a replacement for another day. The only people who have the authority to do this are the RJD and the SJD. Remember, it is your responsibility to call the replacements after you get the names from the assigner and then call the assigner with the name of your replacement. In the case of all USAG state meets, you must call the SJD. You may not get your own replacement on any USAG state meet. The USAG State Board approves state meet assignments.

PAYMENT

The Meet Referee assigned to your meet will determine the number of hours for which you will receive payment. During the meet, she will explain to every judge how to fill out your judge's vouchers for payment. An explanation of the USA Gymnastics Judge's Compensation package may be found in the USAG Women's Program Rules & Policies.

STATE MEET ASSIGNMENTS

Judging panels for state meets are determined in consultation with USAG Board Representatives based on the following factors:

  • Availability of Judge
  • Head Judge Availability; most experienced judges assigned first
  • Rating of Judge
  • Active judging of USAG meets during current season at appropriate level
  • Professional development activities of judges (clinics attended, training camps attended)
  • Geography and carpooling arrangements
  • Affiliation (not assigned as Chief Judge if affiliated)
  • Contributions to State Associations (USAG; NAWGJ)

No single factor determines whether a judge will be selected for a state meet or not. The USAG Board looks at the entire portfolio the judge presents on the availability form.

REGIONAL MEET ASSIGNMENTS

In order to be eligible to judge a regional meet in Region 8, a judge must have in-gym experience in addition to meeting all other active status requirements. Each experience must be a minimum of two hours. The level of gymnasts must be equal to or greater than the level of the meet the judge wishes to be considered for. A maximum of 3 hours may be from a Regional, National Elite or JO Training Camp. A Training Camp may only count for either in-gym experience or clinic experience but not both. A small random sample of in-gym cards is selected each year for audit purposes. The experience must be an interactive experience; it is not sufficient to sit in the stands and watch work-out. Judges must call ahead to schedule gym time. The judge’s activities should be under the supervision of the gym’s coach. Regional assignments are determined by RTCC in consultation with the USAG Regional Board. Judges for Level 10 Regionals are selected from among the most qualified, regardless of State.

NATIONAL ASSIGNMENTS

Level 10 Nationals and Level 9 Eastern Nationals are based on recommendations from the USAG Regional Board and selected by the USAG National Office. A rotation system is used with judges who received assignments in the previous year placed at the bottom of the rotation for the future year. Should a Brevet judge who is in a slot eligible for assignment make the decision not to take the assignment, or not judge once assigned, the judge will automatically be dropped to the bottom of the rotation. Should an emergency situation occur and cause the judge to miss his/her assignment, the next judge in the rotation will move up. The situation will be presented to the board to determine if the effected judge takes the rotation slot or the replacement judge or is dropped to the bottom of the rotation.

The number of judging slots received by Region 8 is filled based on the corresponding number of judges at the top of the judges’ rotation. Criteria for selection include: In-gym experience; volunteer to teach or work actively with the athletes at least one Region 8 training camp in the current year and at one in either of the two prior years; active judging at the USAG JO level; judge Regional Championships in the current year and one of the two prior years; acceptance of assignment to Regional Championship in the current year.
